Researchers at the University of Hawaii came up with a new technique they believe will significantly reduce breast cancer biopsies. It's called 3 Compartment Breast Imaging.

It uses improved imaging to and artificial intelligence technology to more accurately detects cancerous tumors. Researchers say with their screening method reduced the number of biopsies needed by 36-percent.

"Ideally what we want in Hawaii is for the women that receive biopsies are the ones that have cancer and you don't have a biopsy if you don't have cancer.  It makes mammography more specific," John Shepard, UH Cancer Center, said.

The technique is still in the experimental phase and researchers say more work needs to be done until it is available to patients.
