HONOLULU - Mayor Derek Kawakami replaces Mayor Bernard Carvalho. He was sworn in Monday at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall.

In his first 100 days in office he vows to request funds to conduct performance audits, establish a new office of human concerns addressing homelessness, drug addiction, alcoholism, suicide, and unemployment.

He also wants to discuss with union partners the option of staggered work hours for a more balanced life for employees, and to reduce traffic during morning and afternoon rush hours.

"We are one county, one people, and one community and we have, we have to work together to effect change," said Kawakami.

Kawakami also thanked Carvalho for paving the path.

Newly elected members of the Kaua'i County Council were also sworn in Monday.
