Winds took down trees in several parts of Oahu causing power outages to about 320 customers, according to HECO. In Diamond Head, a 40-foot-tall tree fell onto Diamond Head Road near Makalei Place at around 11 am Wednesday.
Luckily, nobody was hurt, but it blocked the road in both directions. Police closed the road all day while Hawaiian Electric crews worked on taking it off the road then restoring power.
While there, HECO decided to remove another tree that was nearby because, they say, it looked like it was about to fall.
HECO arborist John Bell explains, "We don't want to wait and see. By removing it now we'll avoid that situation."
That extended the road closure into the late night. HECO says this outage affected about 100 customers. It expects to open the road at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
