TEAM COVERAGE Tropical Storm Olivia: Big Island

Posted: Updated:

Island News reporter Melody Gonzales is on the Big Island continuing Island News Team Coverage of Tropical Storm Olivia.

Some businesses in Hilo closed and boarded up Tuesday after a flash flood warning was issued statewide.

Hawaii County delivered sand to multiple locations across the island and residents were able to fill their own sandbags.

Although Olivia is not projected to directly hit the Big Island, one woman says her daughter's house was flooded by Hurricane Lane, and she's not taking any chances.

"When the river overflows it goes right into her yard.. and its like knee deep, so what we're going to do is, we're preparing with sandbags just to put all alongside her door.. All alongside her house," Big Island resident Linda Laform said.

Another Big Island resident Glenn Sumida says that he is being proactive.

"When the time arrives, when it's flooding it's too late," Sumida said.

Residents tell Island News that the Home Depot in Hilo ran out of sandbags during Lane and hasn't been restocked since.

Some residents had to use garbage bags and buckets instead.
