HONOLULU (KITV) - This week, Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz and Florida Senator Bill Nelson, introduced a new bill that would allow veterans to purchase medical marijuana prescribed by the Department of Veteran Affairs.

The bill would allow for the VA to research the positive impacts the plant could have on veterans managing chronic pain, in order to reduce opioid abuse.

“In the 31 states where medical marijuana is legal, patients and doctors are able to see if marijuana helps with pain management. Our veterans deserve to have that same chance,” Senator Schatz said.

Many groups are supporting the bill, such as the American Academy of Pain Medicine, Americans for Safe Access, NORML, Drug Policy Alliance, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, and more.
