Community comes together to battle Kapolei brush fire

KAPOLEI, Hawaii -

When Tuesday's brush fire started just after 3 p.m., residents of Varona Village in Ewa took action.

"Just to help the firemen trying to keep it away from the housing," Abbie Kaliko, Varona Village resident said.

Kaliko used her own garden hose to water down the flare ups across the road from her Koahi Street home, hoping they wouldn't spread.

She says she did the same thing when the fire started while waiting for Honolulu fire officials to arrive.

She added although the call to HFD went out early, firefighters took longer to get to Varona village because they had to fill up their water tanks.

"We've got only one fire hydrant for this whole village. I wish they would put more," Kaliko said.

While residents and HFD fought the blaze, others raced home worried.

"He said grandma are you home? and I said why no, I'm at the doctors office and he said, I seen fire smoke right behind, right by your place grandma," Fely Bailey, Varona Village resident said.

Bailey was able to get back to her home, narrowly missing the road blocks.

Kapolei Parkway was closed to traffic between Kualakai Parkway to Renton Road for hours.

At one point, Ka Makana Alii mall was evacuated and closed. Mall officials say they were warned the air quality may not be good for shoppers. A long line of cars could be seen leaving the mall parking lot.

Many cars passed right by firefighters, who were still tackling small flare ups in the now burned field.

A field that once was filled with homes and sugarcane fields years ago.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
