HONOLULU (KITV) - A fatal shooting in Mountain View left one officer dead Wednesday morning.

Puna officer Bronson K. Kaliloa was a well-respected 10-year veteran of the Hawaii Police Department-winning multiple awards while on duty. 

Officer Kaliloa was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Hawaii Island. The shooting happened on Highway 11 in Mountain View around 10 Tuesday night.

A Facebook viewer shared a video of what he witnessed at around 11 last night. He says, he was coming home from managing a Red Cross shelter at Pahoa Gym when he heard what sounded like gunshots ahead of him. He says, he saw about 20 police cars.

Island News spoke with a family friend of Officer Kaliloa. Nalu Emperado says, "I extend my love and prayers to his family and to his fellow coworkers and of course, let's hope justice gets served soon so this can be put to rest. And again, I just want to reemphasize, let's show more support for our heroes in blue."

Officer Kaliloa was taken to the Hilo Medical Center Emergency Room where he underwent surgery. However, lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:45 a.m.

He was a 10-year veteran of the Hawaii Police Department, a husband and father of three.
