Hawaii Police report Kawaihae road closed due to downed utility lines

Hawaii Police Department reports Tuesday that Kawaihae road in South Kohala is closed between mile markers 60 and 61 in both directions due to utility lines on the roadway.  

Motorists in the affected area are advised to drive with caution and to avoid the area if possible as police and utility personnel are on scene. 

Alternate routes include the Kohala Mountain road to the North and Highway 190 (the Upper road) to Waikoloa road to the South.

    “Calling All Immigrants” was the theme for Hawai‘i Island’s 12th Annual Peace Day Parade and Festival in Honoka‘a town on Saturday. Hundreds of people lined Mamane Street to enjoy the multi-cultural celebration, with taiko drumming, bon dance, rock n' roll, cirque performers, colorful costumes, and music representing the island’s melting pot culture.
