Big Island Mayor also loses his home to the lava
HAWAII - Big Island Mayor Harry Kim, is among the residents whose home – in Vacationland - was destroyed by lava.
"Then came that very horrendous day of 1975 huge earthquake so the area sank about two and a half feet and that's why we have the waiopae ponds. and that's the truth. the mud water was flushed out within a couple of months. and within a few months after that different fish, a few months after that, the coral started to come in. so sometimes, you just don't know what the future holds, but sometimes it makes it better" said Kim.
He purchased that home in 1971 adding, he borrowed five-thousand dollars to buy it because he wanted to be next to the Waiopae Tidepools. His primary home is in Hilo.
