PUNA, Hawaii - Help for taxpayers affected by the lava disaster in Puna is on the way.

Governor David Ige directed the State Tax Department to provide relief in three ways:

  1. Opportunity for extensions to file and pay taxes  
  2. Allowing taxpayers to claim all of the casualty loss deductions allowed on federal tax return forms on their state returns  
  3. A general excise tax exemption for insurance monies received because of a natural disaster.
