(HAWAII ATHLETICS) —The University of Hawai'i softball team (21-23, 5-10 Big West) returns to Manoa this week to host their final homestand of the season. The Rainbow Wahine will take on the Matadors of CSUN in a three-game conference series, beginning on Friday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. and concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5 at 2:00 p.m. Friday night will be "Power in Pink" night in recognition of breast cancer awareness. There will also be an Autograph Session after Friday night's game. Saturday will be Senior Day for five players who will be making their final appearances at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium—Danielle Garcielita, Jordian Hicks, Courtney Hiruko, Dana Thomsen, and Rachael Turner.
Hawai'i is coming off a 1-2 series loss at UC Riverside last week. The Rainbow Wahine came out on fire in the first game, defeating the Highlanders 11-0 in five innings. Junior third baseman Nicole Lopez led the 'Bows on offense, going 2-for-3 with her first career grand slam and a sacrifice fly to tie her career high with five RBI. But the 'Bows fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader. In game two of the series UH fell 1-0 in a pitcher's duel between Hawai'i's Dana Thomsen and UCR's Taylore Misfeldt. In the series' rubber game, the Highlanders rolled to a 10-2 win in five innings, scoring six of their runs in the fifth inning to end the game.
The Rainbow Wahine are looking to jump start its offense as they are getting out-hit in conference play.316-to-.220. Sophomore catcher Callee Heen continues to lead the 'Bows with a .339 overall batting average with a team-high six doubles, 13 home runs and 32 RBI. She is tied with 25 runs scored with Lopez, who is second on the team with a .324 overall average. She leads UH with 45 hits and four stolen bases.
In the pitching circle, senior Dana Thomsen continues to shoulder much of the workload. She has a 13-14 overall record and a 3.09 ERA entering this week. She had 48 walks to 125 strikeouts in 167.2 innings pitched. Freshman Dominique Martinez is 1-4 with a 5.06 ERA in 36.0 innings and fellow rookie Emily Klee is 2-1 with a 6.07 ERA in 27.2 innings of work.
