(HAWAII ATHLETICS) – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (35-3) makes its third straight appearance in the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., after gaining the No. 3 seed as a West Region selection on Sunday.
Hawai'i will open competition on Friday, May 4 against the No. 6 seed South Caroina (24-7) at 7 a.m. HT. The teams met earlier this year with UH defeating South Carolina on the road in Columbia, 3-2, on March 24 during the Gamecock Challenge.
Joining UH and South Carolina in the double-elimination tournament are No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Pepperdine, No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 and defending champion USC, No. 7 LSU, and No. 8 Florida International.
This will be UH's fifth straight trip as a team to Gulf Shores. The SandBows also competed for the national title during the 2014 and '15 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Championships.
The Rainbow Wahine gained the No. 3 seed after winning its third consecutive Big West championship this past weekend, with a pair of victories over Long Beach State on Saturday. UH comes in with huge momentum, having won a school-record 30 straight matches.
The event will be televised live by ESPN networks, with ESPNU providing live coverage on Friday, May 4 starting at 4 a.m. HT. Live coverage will continue Saturday, May 5 on ESPN2, starting at 8 a.m. HT and Sunday, May 6 at 5:30 a.m. HT on ESPN2. The championship dual will air on ESPN Sunday, May 6, at 8 a.m. HT. Additionally, live streaming coverage of every court throughout the tournament will be available on ESPN3.
