The No. 3 University of Hawaii women's beach volleyball team began its quest for a third straight conference title with a 5-0 sweep of Cal State Bakersfield on the opening day of the Big West Tournament at Queen's Beach.
With the win the top-seeded Rainbow Wahine advanced to the championship bracket and will next face No. 6 ranked and third-seeded Long Beach State (24-6), a 3-2 winner over No. 2 seed Cal Poly.
UH had little trouble with CSU Bakersfield, dispatching the RoadRunners in a little over 30 minutes. The SandBows won each court in straight sets en route to their 28th straight win. Fifteen of the last 17 wins have come via sweeps.
The SandBows now put their undefeated Big West Tournament record (7-0) on the line against Long Beach State. UH has defeated Long Beach State in each of the last two Big West Tournaments and swept the 49ers in the Big West Challenge last month in Northern California.
