The rainfall that devastated Kauai might’ve been the heaviest 24-hour rainstorm in U.S. history.

The National Weather Service gathered preliminary data from a remote rain gauge in Waipa, just outside Hanalei.

The measurements indicate the 49.69 inches of rainfall April 14-15th has broken nation's 24-hour record rainfall.

The previous 24-hour record was 43 inches in Alvin, TX in 1979.

Hawaii’s current record is 38 inches in Kilauea, Kauai in 1956.

The rainfall record still needs to be certified.
