SandBows Sweep In Queen’s Cup; Maglio And Schucht Set New Record

Posted: Updated:

(HAWAII ATHLETICS) – The No. 3 University of Hawai'i women's beach volleyball team won all three of its matches on the opening day of the Queen's Cup Saturday at Queen's Beach. The Rainbow Wahine blanked Utah and No. 16 Loyola Marymount, 5-0, before capping the day with a 4-1 win over Washington.

The SandBows improved to 26-3 on the season and extended their school-record win streak to 21 matches. UH has dropped just two total points in its last 10 matches with eight of its last 10 wins coming via sweeps.

UH's record-breaking season continued with another new milestone on Saturday. Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht entered the day with 14 straight wins, tied for a school record. With three more wins today, the duo now hold sole possession of the record at 17 straight.

The duo had to battle hard for two of the wins. They slid by Dani Barton and Adora Anae of Utah, 21-19, 23-25, 17-15 to open the day and rallied past Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner of Washington in another three-setter, 15-21, 21-17, 16-14, to cap the day. Maglio and Schucht fought off two match points and scored the final four points against the Huskies to keep their streak alive. The duo is 26-3 on the year, including a perfect 17-0 at the No. 1 flight.

Meanwhile, Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee also kept their win streak alive. The tandem has now won 15 straight matches after a trio of straight-set wins at the No. 4 flight. Homayun and Ozee have amazingly dropped just one set in their current win streak.

The Queen's Cup continues tomorrow with the championship round. LMU will face Washington in the first semifinal at 8:30 a.m., followed by UH vs. Utah in the second semifinal at 10:00 a.m. The third-place match will be at 11:30 a.m., while the championship is set for 1:00 p.m.
