(Hawaii Athletics) - University of Hawai'i middle blocker Patrick Gasman was selected as the Big West Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, following the Rainbow Warriors' two-match series sweep of UC San Diego over the weekend.
The award is Gasman's first of his career and the third weekly award for a UH player this season.
The sophomore from Clovis, Calif., averaged 1.50 blocks per set and was in on nine of the team's 17 blocks over the two matches. He was instrumental in helping hold the Tritons to .070 hitting for the series, including .013 in the rematch.
Gasman had five kills, five blocks, and one ace in the opener and three kills and four blocks in the rematch. He averaged 1.33 kills per set and hit .353 over the weekend.
Earlier this season, UH grabbed the Player of the Week (Stijn van Tilburg) and Defensive Player of the Week (Larry Tuileta) awards following a two-match split with UC Irvine. Gasman and the Rainbow Warriors will next travel to No. 11 UC Santa Barbara this week for a two-match Big West series in Santa Barbara, Calif.
