UH Softball Falls In Big West Opener At No. 18 Long Beach State, 6-0
The University of Hawai'i softball team (16-14, 0-1 Big West) fell in its Big West opener at No. 18 Long Beach State, 6-0 on Friday afternoon at the Beach Softball Complex.
(Hawaii Athletics) - The University of Hawai'i softball team (16-14, 0-1 Big West) fell in its Big West opener at No. 18 Long Beach State, 6-0 on Friday afternoon at the Beach Softball Complex.
The 49ers scored first, posting four runs on five hits in the second inning. Julia Lombardi drove in the first run on an RBI single. Later LBSU rallied to load the bases, which Naomi Hernandez cleared with two outs on a double to the rightfield fence, to give Long Beach State a 4-0 lead.
The Beach's Taylor Rowland hit a solo home run to right to extend their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third.
Long Beach State added its final run in the bottom of the sixth. With runners at second and third, Rachel Loera reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher which allowed Taylor Tiger to score to give The Beach a 6-0 lead.
Hawai'i's Danielle Garcielita had two of UH's four hits, going 2-for-2 at the plate.
UH starter Dana Thomsen took the loss, dropping her record to 9-10 overall and 0-1 in conference. She gave up six runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Dominique Martinez got the final two outs in the sixth in relief.
Long Beach State pitcher Cielo Meza improved to 15-2 in a complete game shutout. She gave up four hits with no walks and 17 strikeouts.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, March 31 with a doubleheader starting at 10:00 am HT at the Beach Softball Complex.
