(Hawaii Athletics) - The No. 3 University of Hawai'i women's beach volleyball team swept a pair of matches on the opening day of the Big West Challenge hosted by Sacramento State and in the process set a new record for consecutive victories. With a pair of 5-0 shutouts of Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN, UH extended its win streak to 15 matches, surpassing the former mark of 13 set in 2015.
The Rainbow Wahine, who last lost on March 10, have accomplished the feat in impressive fashion. Seven of the wins have come against ranked opponents and more than half (8) of the teams' 15 straight wins have occurred on the mainland. Meanwhile, five of the team's last six victories have been via sweeps.
In Friday's matches at Livermore Park, the SandBows overwhelmed CSUB (3-7) at CSUN (9-4), winning all 10 courts in straight sets. Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht, who played at the top of the order, have now won 11 straight matches and are threatening the record for consecutive wins by a pair (14) . The duos of Ari Homayun/Amy Ozee and Paige Dreeuws/Hannah Zalopany have also been on fire, each winning nine straight matchups.
With the pair of dual wins, UH pushed its record to 20-3 overall, the program's second-straight 20-win season and third all-time.
The SandBows conclude the Big West Challenge on Saturday with a trio of matches, including a pair of big matches vs. No. 5 Long Beach State and No. 6 Cal Poly. UH will face Cal Poly (6 a.m. HT), followed by host Sacramento State (9 a.m. HT), before concluding the tournament against Long Beach State (3 p.m. HT).
