The long road to recovery begins for Yokozuna Akebono, Hawaii's own Chad Ha'aheo Rowen.
Rowen is in a wheelchair, unable to walk.
Island News spoke with his wife Christine tonight. She said her husband suffered acute heart failure in April of last year and was in a medically induced coma for two weeks.
At times, the family thought they would lose him.
But much like with his sumo and wrestling careers, he has persevered.
He has lost nearly 130 pounds, much of it in muscle. He cannot walk but he can get around in a wheelchair.
He begins intensive physical therapy Monday.
His goal: to one day return to the ring and return to work.
