Online purchase scams were reported to be the riskiest form of consumer fraud according to the Better Business Bureau. More than 47,000 scams were reported to the BBB Scam Tracker, last year alone.

Young people continue to be at a higher risk for scams, although the amount of money lost increases with age.

The "Can you hear me?" scam was another prevalent phenomena in 2017.

“BBB Scam Tracker received more than 10,000 reports on the ‘Can you hear me?’ scam, but virtually none of those reporting could point to an actual monetary loss due to the calls," notes co-author Dr. Rubens Pessanha, senior director of market research, insights, and strategy with the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

Automobiles, electronics, cosmetics, clothing, and pets were the most common online purchase scams in 2017.

Last year's top ten riskiest scams were:

  1. Online purchase scam
  2. Investment scam
  3. Employment scam
  4. Advance fee loan
  5. Fake check scam
  6. Home improvement
  7. Tech support scam
  8. Travel/vacation scam
  9. Family/friend emergency scam
  10. government grant scam

Since 2016, tax collection scams have decreased by 60%, and home improvement scams have dropped from 1st to 6th.
