HONOLULU - Homicide rates in Hawaii saw a noticeable increase from 2016 to 2017.

The Honolulu Police Department says 27 homicides occurred last year, a jump from numbers in the high teens in 2016.

The latest homicide occurred last night, involving 23-year-old Evelin Iturbide, who fatally stabbed her husband to death in Moanalua.

Residents who live in the apartment complex say the incident is surprising and worrisome, although this isn’t the first time they have seen crime in the area.

Although homicide rates went up, HPD says numbers are still low compared to other places in the country.
