HONOLULU - Video of what appears to be a woman sitting on a sea turtle at Ho'okipa Beach Park on Maui is raising eyebrows on social media.

Oriana Kalama was appalled by what she saw and filmed the incident after she pleaded with the woman to move.  Kalama founded the environmental group, Ocean Defender on Maui.

The organization posts videos and photos on social media that call attention to negative impacts to the ocean and sea animals.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources says it is reviewing the video.

The green sea turtle is on the endangered species list.  The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration has the following guidelines regarding sea turtles:

  • Observe turtles from a distance.
  • Do not attempt to touch, ride, or feed turtles.
  • Limit your time observing an animal to 30 minutes.
  • Bring binoculars on viewing excursions to assure a good view from the recommended viewing distances.

To report sea turtle disturbance or legal violation, please call the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement Hotline: 1-800-853-1974 and then call DLNR, Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) statewide hotline: 643-DLNR (3567).

Violations can be reported here as well as the DOCARE reporting app " DLNRTip" which can be downloaded in the iTunes and Google Play stores on iOS and Android devices, respectively.
