LIHUE, Hawaii -

Kauai police are investigating an apparent hit-and-run in Hanamaulu Thursday after a 12-year-old girl was critically injured.

The Department of Education confirmed the girl is from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.

It happened near Hoohana Street and Laukona Street at around 7 a.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the girl appeared to have been walking along Laukona Street when she was struck by a vehicle.  The vehicle was not there when police arrived.  No arrests have been made.

The area was closed while officers investigated Thursday morning.  This affected about 30 students at two nearby school bus stops servicing CKMS and Kauai High. Parents picked up some of these students and others were picked up at an alternate bus stop, but all were transported successfully to their respective campuses.  The DOE wants to thank students and parents for their cooperation and understanding.

A letter to parents and guardians of students at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School was sent out reminding students and parents to be safe when going to and from school.
