Rainbow Wahine Basketball Opens Two-Game Homestand on Thursday Against UC Irvine

Posted: Updated:

(Hawaii Athletics) - The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team returns from a challenging Big West opening weekend on the road for a two-game homestand, beginning Thursday night with UC Irvine coming to the Stan Sheriff Center. Tipoff between the Rainbow Wahine and Anteaters is set for 7:00 p.m.

The Rainbow Wahine (7-8, 0-2 Big West) look to leave road shooting troubles behind and get back in the win column at home, where UH is 5-3 this season. Hawai'i shot just 35.6 percent on the California road trip, but have shot 44.6 percent at home this season, where senior guard Sarah Toeaina produced three of her four 20-point performances. Toeaina tops the UH scorers and ranks sixth in the Big West with a 14.2 PPG average, also nabbing a team second-most 5.0 RPG. Sophomore forward Makenna Woodfolk is coming off an 11-point outing to lead UH at UC Davis, and averages 8.1 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds. Sophomore guard Julissa Tago and junior forward Lahni Salanoa also chip in 10.6 and 9.0 points, respectively.

The Anteaters (8-7, 0-1 Big West) bounced back from a 2-5 start and have won three of their last four in the second year under Tamara Inoue. UCI averages 69.9 PPG to UH's 63.5, but both teams are allowing 71.1 by opponents on the year. The Anteaters spread their scoring around, with no starters averaging double figures, led by sophomore guard Yazzy Sa'Dullah's 8.6 PPG average. Sophomore guard Lauren Saiki chips in 8.4 points and leads UCI with 3.9 assists per outing, while Jordan Sanders and Andee Ritter add 7.8 and 7.7 points, combining for 9.3 RPG.

The Rainbow Wahine have historically dominated the series, holding a 30-8 advantage and winning the last eight meetings back to 2013. UH earned the 73-60 victory last February in Irvine.

The homestand continues on Saturday (Jan. 13), as UH faces Long Beach State on the front end of a doubleheader with the Hawai'i men's team. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Sheriff Center.
