UH Men’s Basketball Hosts Cal Poly In Big West Home Opener

Posted: Updated:

(Hawaii Athletics) - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team takes on Cal Poly in its Big West home opener, the first of four straight home games in the month of January for the Rainbow Warriors.  Tipoff for the game is 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH went 1-1 on the road to open league with polar opposite defensive efforts. The 'Bows allowed 63 percent shooting and a season-high 89 points at Long Beach State, only to turnaround in its very next game and hold CSUN to just 28 percent and a season low 45 points.

Defense will be key once again, particularly on the perimeter. Cal Poly, the top three-point shooting team in the conference, made 19 three-pointers in its last game. Meanwhile, UH held its first two Big West opponents to a combined 4-of-25 (.160) from behind the arc.

Offensively, UH will continue to look to senior forward Mike Thomas who is averaging 17.3 ppg and shooting 80 percent (28-of-35) in the last four games, including 14-of-16 (.875) from the field in the first two Big West games of the year.

The Rainbow Warriors have defeated the Mustangs five straight times dating back to 2015, and have lost just once to the Mustangs in the last seven meetings.

Following its game vs. Cal Poly, UH will host UC Santa Barbara, on Saturday, Jan. 13.
