Big Island police are on the scene of barricade situation at a home in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision in Lower Puna on Tuesday.
The incident started at around 12:20 a.m., when officers responded to reports of gunshots fired at a residence on Kamanu Street.
When officers arrived, they found a man with a firearm in a vehicle parked in the home's driveway. The person who lives at the house was able to leave safely and was unharmed.
The department’s Special Response Team is on the scene, and crisis negotiators have communication with the suspect who remains within the vehicle.
Police say Puna Parkway and Papio Street are both closed from Kahakai Boulevard, which is also cutting off any access to Kamanu Street. Neighboring residents have been asked to evacuate the area for their safety. Police ask that the public avoid the area.
