WAIANAE, Hawaii - An on-duty Honolulu Police Department officer fires her weapon in Wai'anae after what police described as a life threatening situation. 

It happened Sunday just before 10 p.m.

Three officers were called-out on a tip that a man in a white van was spotted brandishing several knives.

When officers went to question the suspect, that's when things went south. 

"They tried to stop him. He disobeyed their orders, collided with two of the cars, before pursuing the officers, driving directly at one of the officers," John McCarthy, Deputy Chief with HPD said.

A female officer took a shot at the van before it fled. 

The van was later recovered not far from the scene. 

Police are actively searching for the suspect who is wanted for arrest in an attempted first degree murder case. 

The suspect is said have a criminal past of two prior convictions.

This is the first officer involved shooting of the year.
