HALEIWA, Hawaii - Maui surfer Dusty Payne was hospitalized in serious condition Monday after after suffering a head injury on Oahu's North Shore, according to Surfer.com and Emergency Medical Services officials.

It happened just before 10 a.m. at the Backdoor surf spot.

Surfer.com spoke with North Shore photographer Keiki Saguibo, who said Payne was held down for three move waves.  By the time Saguibo got to Payne, the surfer was unconscious.
