Mall shops rack up big sales during Japanese retail tradition

Over 50 retailers at Ala Moana Center are offering “Happy Grab Bags” today for Fukubukuro, a Japanese retail tradition where shoppers have the opportunity to purchase a grab bag filled with mystery merchandise worth at least double the cost of the bag.  

Hundreds of shoppers lined up as early as 6 a.m. New Year's Day in excitement to get their hands on the bags and the first big deals of the year. 

Businesses like Michael Kors and Maui Divers Jewelry say they make the most sales out of the entire year during Fukubukuro.
