HILO, Hawaii - Big Island police say the number of deadly crashes is up by 11 percent in 2017.

There were 32 deaths due to vehicle crashes in 2017 on the Big Island.  In 2016, there 27 fatal crashes.

Arrests for driving under the influence is also up this year by more than 4 percent.  There were 1,135 DUI arrests, as of Christmas Eve.
