A man is dead and a woman was sent to the hospital after being hit by a SUV in Hau'ula Saturday. The crash happened around 4 p.m. near the Hau'ula Shopping Center. Two people who were in the vehicle in question have been arrested and are in police custody.
Vika Fifita Unga, 36, and David M. Kinikini, 34, have not been charged.
Police say the driver, Unga, sent them on a search after she fled from the scene. The crash closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions. HPD says the elderly man and woman were waiting for the bus when the northbound SUV veered off of Kamehameha Highway, crossing the center line and eventually running into the bus stop where the couple was.
Both were taken to a hospital where the elderly man died. The elderly woman was last listed in serious condition.
Unga was identified by witnesses after her capture hours later and arrested for two counts of failing to render aid and negligent homicide. Kinikini, a passenger in the SUV, was also arrested for hindering prosecution.
Police don't believe speed, drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
This marks the 46th fatality of the year, compared to 55 the same time last year.
