Caldwell asks for moratorium to address monster home problem
To address what some call a growing problem of "monster homes," Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell asked the City Council on Wednesday to pass legislation on a moratorium, or a pause, on construction.
Caldwell says, "The spread of monster homes is a serious issue that affects the well-being of families in long-established neighborhoods and we need to get a handle on the situation before it spirals out of control."
He acknowledges the homes are springing up because of a need for housing, but says they change the character of communities. He's also asking the Department of Planning and Permitting to draft rules for future construction.
