HONOLULU - A 50-year-old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle in Waimanalo Tuesday night, according to police.

It happened at around 9:15 p.m. in front of Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School.

Investigators say the pedestrian was walking in the middle of the road on Kalanianaole Highway heading towards Kailua.  One vehicle was able to swerve and avoid the pedestrian.  A second vehicle was unable to turn quickly enough and hit the pedestrian.  The second vehicle was operated by a 74-year-old man from Honolulu.

Police say there was inclement weather at the time of the accident.  Investigators say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this case.  Officers are continuing to investigate.
