HILO, Hawaii - A study at the University of Hawaii-Hilo found 94 percent of rats in Hilo have rat lungworm disease.

Results come after 18 confirmed cases diagnosed and as the state launches its first campaign to combat the disease.

The infection reproduces in rats and is transferred to slugs and snails.

Earlier this year Hawaii state lawmakers gave a million dollars to the Department of Health to control the spread of the disease.
