A juvenile male was arrested and charged Friday for causing the Kahului Elementary School fire that happened on Nov. 24.

The 17-year-old was charged for Arson in the First Degree, Burglary in the Second Degree, Burglary in the Second Degree (Attempted) and Criminal Property Damage in the Fourth Degree.

The juvenile appeared in Family Court where he was ordered to be transferred and held at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility on Oahu. 

The investigation remains open and active.

At approximately 09:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, emergency crews responded to a two-alarm fire at Kahului Elementary School. A building in the middle of the campus was partially on fire, which also damaged the exterior of an adjacent building. A portable classroom closer to the Maui High School parking lot was engulfed in flames.   

The fire was brought under control at about 11 p.m. and extinguished at about 12:50 a.m.

Damages to the structure was estimated at $900,000 and damages to the contents was estimated at $300,000.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
