Maui freediver in critical condition after being pulled from water
Emergency crews in West Maui responded to a report Saturday morning of a man waving his arms in distress about 100 yards off shore from Papalaua Wayside Park in Ukumehame.
When paramedics and firefighters from Lahaina and Maalaea arrived at 10:35 a.m., bystanders had already brought the victim to shore and were performing CPR on him. Crews continued CPR on the man until he eventually regained a pulse and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The victim is a 58-year-old Waiehu man who had been spearfishing offshore when something caused him to call out for help. Witnesses on the beach reported seeing the man waving his arms in the air as if he needed help. Two bystanders went out with bodyboards to assist the man. At some point, the man became unresponsive and was brought back to shore.
