Extradition hearing set for Saito in Calif.

Posted: Updated:

An extradition hearing has been set for Dec. 5 in California for Hawaii State Hospital escapee Randall Saito.

At the San Joaquin County courthouse on Monday, Saito was given the choice to either admit his identity and agree to extradition back to Hawaii or ask for a hearing to be scheduled to contest extradition. Saito chose the latter option.

Saito left the Hawaii State Hospital earlier this month.  He then chartered a plane to Maui and then made his way to California where he was later arrested.

"With thanks to the Honolulu Police Department Fugitive Task Force, I understand Mr. Saito’s fingerprints were sent to San Joaquin County authorities and positively match the man who was arrested. The San Joaquin prosecutor continues to work closely with us to get Mr. Saito back to Hawaii to face escape charges," said Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin.

Upon his return to Hawaii, Saito will be held as a pre-trial felon at the Oahu Community Correctional Center unless he posts the $500,000 bail or bond set on the escape charge. If he does post the bail, he will be sent back to the Hawaii State Hospital. Either way, Saito would not be released into the community.

Chin said, furthermore, at Saito’s first appearance in court in Hawaii, the state intends to ask for bail to be increased or for the court to order him held without bail.
