North shore surf expected to reach heights of 22 feet

Posted: Updated:

Sunday's north swell meant a no-swim day on Oahu's North Shore.

A high surf advisory is in effect for north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii Island until 6 p.m. Monday.  With the exception of the Big Island, surf is expected to reach heights of 18 to 22 feet.

Warning signs were posted to tell beach goers to stay out of the water.

Lifeguard Kerry Atwood offered a warning not to take the waves lightly. "We want to remind everybody, please, don't venture out on to wet rocks. Do not venture out on to wet sand. Abide by the warning tape, obey warning signs and, most importantly, listen to your lifeguard."

The big surf, however, did make for a great day for the Hawaiian Pro surf event, the first jewel of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
