UH Women's Volleyball Sweeps UC Davis, Kahakai Moves to No. 3 in Career Digs
The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team earned their third-consecutive sweep with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-12 win on the road at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif.
(Hawaii Athletics) - The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team earned their third-consecutive sweep with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-12 win on the road at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif. Hawai'i improves to 19-7 overall and 13-2 in the Big West while UC Davis fell to 16-13 overall and evened their conference mark at 8-8. McKenna Granato led Hawai'i with an errorless hitting performance, recording a match-high 14 kills in 23 swings to go over the 700 career kill mark. Senior libero Savanah Kahakai moved up to No. 3 on the UH career dig list.
Granato posted a career-high .609 hitting percentage for the match to lead UH. It was the 18th time this season that she's put down double-digits in kills. She also added an assist, a service ace, a solo block and six digs.
In the first set, Kahakai recorded five digs to pass former UH great Reydan "Tita" Ahuna for No. 3 on the UH career dig list. Kahakai entered the match needing just four digs to tie Ahuna at 1,384. Kahakai finished the night with eight digs, which snapped her streak of 15-straight games with double-digit digs. She now has 1,388 career digs in her four year UH career.
Setter Norene Iosia filled her stat line, dishing out 23 assists with a match-high four blocks (one solo) to go with a service ace and four digs. She also saw some time swinging from the leftside with Faith Ma'afala as the setter in the back row. Iosia finished the night tying her career-high with six kills with no errors in 14 attacks for a .429 hitting percentage.
Senior Kalei Greeley recorded her second straight double-digit dig match. After posting 14 digs on Senior Night in the Stan Sheriff Center, she led the 'Bows with 12 at UC Davis. Greeley also added a service ace.
All fourteen UH players on the roadtrip contributed in Thursday night's win. UH outhit the Aggies, .402-to-.033 and out-blocked UCD, 9.0-to-2.0. The Rainbow Wahine committed just six hitting errors for the match while UC Davis recorded 23 hitting errors on 91 attacks. It was the ninth straight win for the 'Bows against UC Davis dating back to 2013.
In the first set, UH took an early six point lead, but UC Davis would soon countered with a 4-0 run to force the 'Bows to call timeout as they hung on to a 15-14 lead. But after the timeout, UH would pull away to capture the first set, 25-18.
The second set saw the 'Bows race out to a 10-4 lead highlighted by a 5-0 run with Gianna Guinasso serving four of those points. The 'Bows would coast to a 25-11 win to take a 2-0 lead into the break. UH finished on a 4-0 run with Iosia serving. The Aggies ended the set with three-straight hitting errors. In the frame, Hawai'i hit .615 with 167 kills, no errors in 25 attacks.
Set 3 saw UC Davis take their first lead of the match at 4-3, but from there, UH went on a 7-0 run with Guinasso once again behind the service line wreaking havoc for the Aggies. During the run, Guinasso tied her career-high with two service aces. After a UCD sideout, UH pushed their lead to 10 on Iosia's serve for a 15-5 lead. UH then cruised to a 25-12 win to seal their 19th victory of the season.
UC Davis' Mahalia White led the Aggies with 13 kills while hitting .296 and Malia Bolko recorded a match-high 14 digs.
The Rainbow Wahine will conclude their regular season at UC Irvine on Saturday, Nov. 18 at UC Irvine. The match will be televised on Fox Sports Prime Ticket (Ch. 228/1228). First serve slated for 6:00 pm HT. It will be the final regular season match for UH's six seniors—Clare-Marie Anderson, Kalei Greeley, Gianna Guinasso, Savanah Kahakai, Kendra Koelsch, and Emily Maglio.
