Maui police: State hospital patient caught flight to Calif.

Posted: Updated:
HONOLULU (AP) -

Maui police say an investigation revealed the Hawaii State Hospital escapee was able to fly to the Valley Isle.  After reviewing footage at Kahului Airport, detectives determined that Randall Saito boarded a flight headed to California.

Jon Vaden, marketing manage at the Mineta San Jose International Airport, released the following statement:

I can confirm we're coordinating our Public Affairs efforts with HPD on this case and are aware of the situation. Our airport's security officer is currently providing assistance to law enforcement officers but I do not know which agencies specifically so cannot provide any additional info at this time.

The FBI released the following statement:

The FBI Violent Crime Task Force is assisting State of Hawaii and Honolulu Police authorities in relocating and apprehending Randall Saito.

U.S. Marshals are also assisting in the investigation.

Hawaii authorities are searching for a man who was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity after he escaped from the state hospital outside Honolulu and flew to Maui.

Honolulu police say Randall Saito left the Hawaii State Hospital at 9 a.m. Sunday and failed to return.  U.S. Marshals are now assisting in the search for Saito.

Maui County police say Saito flew to Maui shortly after he left the hospital, but they don't know where he is now.

The 59-year-old is 6 feet tall and 220 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Saito was committed to the hospital in 1981. He was acquitted by reason of insanity of the 1979 murder of Sandra Yamashiro at a Honolulu mall.

Defense attorneys sought to have him released in 2000. But prosecutors objected, saying Saito fit the criteria of a classic serial killer.

If you have any information on Saito, please call police at (808) 244-6400 or call 911 in an emergency.  You may also call the State Department of Public Safety Sheriff’s Department at (808) 587-3623.
