Trumpeter Eddie Henderson performs in Waikiki in Nov.
Hailed as the most talented trumpeter of his generation, Lee Morgan was playing with Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie in his teens. Morgan died in 1972 when his wife, Helen, shot him at a New York jazz club.
What were the dynamics of their relationship? What is his legacy today?
Director Kasper Collin produced a 92-minute documentary that traces the lives of the couple from their roots to the events of that winter's night. “Part jazz history, part true-crime, I Called Him Morgan is a beautiful portrait of individuals transformed by art, love, and overpowering impulses,” reads the press release.
Before the movie, on November 3 and 4, there’s a special jazz concert in memory of Morgan. Halekulani’s “Live at Lewers!” jazz series will feature renowned trumpeter Eddie Henderson, who had known and worked with Morgan. Henderson calls him a friend and formative influence.
