(Hawaii Athletics) - UC Santa Barbara had no answer for Sonest Furtado on Thursday, as Furtado led the Hawai'i soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Gauchos, netting both Rainbow Wahine goals, including a dramatic 86th-minute game-winner.
UC Santa Barbara (4-7-4, 0-3-1 Big West) led 1-0 after scoring off a corner kick in the 17th minute. The Gauchos set the tone early on, earning three corner kicks in the opening four minutes and controlling possession before taking the early lead.
The 'Bows (6-7, 1-3 Big West) eventually settled in, and Furtado evened the score just before halftime after taking a pass from Tia Furuta, beating the UCSB defense, and eventually goalkeeper Brittney Rogers, to make it a 1-1 game in the 45th minute.
In a second half that featured five yellow cards, the score remained tied at 1-1 in the 86th minute until Keala Parker-Lee found Furtado behind the Gaucho defense. Furtado beat Gaucho goalkeeper Maddie Julian inside the near post for the game-winner.
UCSB's best opportunity to force overtime occurred with less than 30 seconds to play. The Gauchos earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and Shaelan Murison fired a dangerous shot on goal before UH goalkeeper Alexis Mata came up with the save to seal the 2-1 victory.
Furtado moves into a tie for 10th in Rainbow Wahine history with 13 career goals after her brace on Thursday. She also became the seventh Rainbow Wahine player to record three or more multiple goal matches in her career. She has a team-high six goals, including three game-winners this season.
UCSB out-shot UH 14-10 in the match, and held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Alexis Mata made seven saves to pick up her sixth victory of the season. Raisa Strom-Okimoto had three shots in the game, including a 22-yard free kick that appeared destined for the goal before Rogers came up with a diving save in the first half. UCSB had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, including 6-0 in the first half.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Hawai'i, and a six-game Big West Conference losing streak, dating back to last season. The Rainbow Wahine host CSUN on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium as Big West play continues.
