Helping hands across the state come to create two-mile lei for Las Vegas

KAIMUKI, HI -

Helping hands gathered in Kaimuki Thursday morning to assemble their part of a Lei of Aloha that will be sent to Las Vegas next week.

The Jawaiian Irie Jerk restaurant on Waialae Avenue is the central location for volunteers who is taking part in this.

The Lei is the brainchild of Ron Panzo, owner of the Nalu Restaurant on Maui.

His efforts in previous years includes sending Lei to Paris and Florida following tragedies there.

"Of course because of Las Vegas is our ninth sister island, he feels like instead of a mile long, we need to do it two miles long. So instead of doing it out of Maui, he called sister islands and he called me to make at least a quarter mile ti-leaf Lei," Colleen Nomura, Jawaiian Ire Jerk said.

Nomura says Iolani School's hula halau on Oahu and members of New Hope Church are helping the effort.

The plan is for the Lei being made on the other islands to be brought to Honolulu Tuesday where it will be assembled and then sent to Las Vegas.
