KIHEI, Hawaii -

Lifeguards closed the beaches between Kamaole Beach Park I through III due to a shark incident on Thursday, according to Maui fire officials.

At around 12:30 p.m., a 40-year-old woman from Canada was snorkeling about 10 yards off of the shoreline between Kamaole II and III.  She was bumped by what is described as a 8-foot-long gray shark.

The shark swam off into the deep ocean and the woman was able to swim to shore.  She suffered minor abrasions to her left thigh and left arm and declined medical treatment.

The beaches were reopened at around 2:45 p.m. after the all-clear was given.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Makena State Park was closed for two hours after an 8-foot-long Galapagos shark snatched the fish from two divers and followed them to shore.  On Sept. 21, Makena State Park was closed briefly after a shark snatched the catch from two men spearfishing about 100 yards offshore.
