Hilo man gets 2 life sentences in 2013 double murder case

Posted: Updated:
HILO, Hawaii -

A Hilo man was given two life sentences with the possibility of parole on Wednesday in connection with the murder of his longtime girlfriend and her mother back in 2013.

Sean Matsumoto was accused of killing his 45-year-old girlfriend, Rhonda Lynn Alohalani Ahu, and her 74-year-old mother, Elaine Ahu.

The life sentences will be served concurrently.  He must spend at least 15 years in prison before being able to seek release from the Hawaii Paroling Authority.

Matsumoto had been initially charged with first-degree murder, but he struck a plea deal with prosecutors.  He pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in exchange for the first-degree murder charge being dropped.
