Monk seal visits Hanauma Bay

Posted: Updated:

A Hawaiian monk seal made an early morning visit on Thursday to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve.

At first, some thought the monk seal was Rocky, the female monk seal to gave birth at Kaimana Beach during the summer.  Since Rocky was never tagged, volunteers and staff from Hawai'i Marine Animal Response can't be positive of this seal's identity.

Swimmers report the seal was swimming parallel to the beach before it made its way onto the sand on the left side of the beach at about 6:50 a.m.  Shortly after 9 a.m., the seal went back into the water and was last seen swimming back toward the open ocean.

Bystanders are asked to keep a safe distance from seals resting or sleeping on the beach.  Harassing endangered Hawaiian monk seals in any way violates both federal and state marine mammal protection laws.
