Police investigate deadly collision between dump truck, bicyclist
The westbound lanes of North King Street, between Ka'ili Street and Mokauea Street, were closed Wednesday afternoon due to a traffic investigation after a deadly collision between a dump truck and a bicyclist.
The bicyclist was identified as 69-year-old Victorio Padilla, according to the Honolulu medical examiner. Police say he lived in the area.
It happened at around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of North King Street and Ka'ili Street.
Emergency Medical Services officials say Padilla was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
"The dump truck was making a right turn and we are still investigating what direction -- either east or westbound -- the cyclist was traveling. The victim was a male in his 60s. He expired at the hospital," said Lt. Andre Peters of the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division.
Later, investigators say they determined the bicyclist was heading east when he was hit. Police do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.
