WAILUKU, Hawaii -

Maui police say a 77-year-old woman from Haiku was killed in a one-car crash on Tuesday.

The woman was identified as Maryvonne P. Kosatschkow.

At around 3:14 p.m., Kosatchkow was driving a red 2001 Volkswagen Passat on Kauhikoa Road north of Mai Place in Haiku.  Police say as she was traveling north on Kauhikoa Road, her car went left of the center line in a bend in the road.  She drove off of the roadway, went up a dirt embankment and crashed into a tree.

Kosatchkow was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A preliminary investigation revealed she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.  The cause of the crash is under investigation.

This is Maui County's 12th traffic fatality this year compared with 13 at the same time last year.
