Federal firefighter fighting allegations of raping minor

Posted: Updated:

A federal firefighter is fighting allegations that he raped a minor under the age of 14.

Joseph Sonognini appeared at his arraignment Monday morning. He faces 13 counts of sexual assault.

The assaults allegedly began back in 2014 and continued until last year.

His attorney says the indictment is invalid because it has been altered.

"Yes, the allegations are false. We are fully defending them and what makes this even more interesting is right now, we don't even know what the allegations are because the prosecutors in our opinion have tampered with a legal document," Victor Bakke, defense attorney said.

"The document is an indictment and we amend indictments in court all the time with hand written amendments. That's done routinely in front of the grand jury," Thalia Murphy, prosecuting attorney said.

The Judge entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of Sonognini.

Sonognini is stationed at the fire station at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam.

His trial is set for December 4.
