Thursday marks one year since the passing of Hawaii Congressman Mark Takai.

The father of two lost his battle with cancer while serving Hawaii in the House of Representatives.

In Washington D.C., Takai's colleague, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard remembering her long-time friend.

"On this day, commemorating Mark, my heart is with his family: his wife Sami, his kids, Matthew and Kaila, his parents, Naomi and Erik, our entire National Guard ohana, and the people of Hawaii as we remember and honor the entire life and legacy of his service. Aloha," Gabbard said.

Both Takai and Gabbard served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and the Armed Services Committee in Congress.

Takai also spent 20 years as a state lawmaker. He was 49.
